They were meant to protect persons who were transferring either to a new employer or a new insurance policy in order that their health care was protected. Now their health care, and fianancial security is easily jeopardized because of the stupid ways in which this law is being used. I will scream with you! I have been working on behalf of a friend to get her bills paid while she has been hospitalized, and NO ONE wants to even tell me what she owes them! The power company went so far as to shut off her juice rather than tell me what sort of payment she owed. (At the time she was in ICU and aspirated and under heavy meds, so I was winging it.) Of course they charged her $11.70 to reconnect... Grrrr! A few minutes ago, I spoke to a person at one of her doctors' offices to get an account balance so I could send them a check, and he said some about "privacy" and "HIPAA". I told him it's about time people reread the HIPAA laws since HIPAA has NOTHING TO DO WITH PAYING SOMEONE'S BILLS! Thankfully I was listed on her account as a contact, so he told me what she owed, and they'll now get a check. This HIPAA stuff is insane - makes me want to scream! Oh wait: I think I just did! ;-) Wow, can I relate!
